Gehlen Catholic's "Superior" Bands

The Gehlen Catholic has been blessed with a "superior" Instrumental Music Department. They are looking forward to another great year!

The 2014 Gehlen Catholic Competition Marching Band (CMB) was blessed with another very good fall. This year's show was "Spy-ied," an adaptation of the comedic spy-thriller, "Spies Like Us." The CMB earned at Starfest: 1st place in Class 1A and 7th overall; a "I" rating at the Iowa High School Music Association's State Marching Band Contest; and at the Dutchmen Field Championships: 1st Place, Best Color Guard, Drum Major, and Horn Line, along with the Pizza Ranch Triple "S" (Sportmanship) Award.

The Gehlen Catholic CMB will be announcing their December 2015 Bowl trip soon. The CMB's last trip was in 2012 at the 2012 Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego. In addition to performing at half-time of the Holiday Bowl, the band performed in the Big Balloon Bay Parade (which has more balloons than Macy's), where they earned 3rd place in Class A. The band also earned 1st Place in Class A and won all the awards in the field show competition. The Holiday Bowl is the four bowl in seven years the CMB has competed in. Past Bowls also include the Autozone Bowl in Memphis; Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio; and the Champs Sports (former Citrus) Bowl in Orlando. The awards and trophies from the band's past bowls are on display outside the Kolker Library and Media Center at Gehlen.

The musicians performed for the Northwest Iowa High School Honor Band, as well one student auditioned for the All-State Honor Band and Orchestra. Congratulations to Michaela Bretey on her selection for Coronet I in All State Honor Band.

During the second quarter, the Jazz Band will begin their preparations for the coming year. During the 2013-2014 school year, the Jazz Band has had an equally impressive year! Jazz I placed 3rd in Class 1A at Districts, which placed them on the Wild Card list for the 2014 Iowa Jazz Championships (IJC); and 1st in Class 1A at the Morningside Jazz Festival. The Jazz Band did receive an invitation to the IJC. At IJC in Class 1A, the Jazz Band placed 7th overall; Dong Min Kim, Evan Niebuhr, and Michaela Bretey received Outstanding Soloists Awards; and Michaela Bretey was one of four students in Class 1A who received the Outstanding Musician Award. (This is the first time a Gehlen Catholic student has received an Outstanding Musician Award.) 2014 marks the fifth time Jazz I has qualified for the IJC. In 2012, Gehlen Catholic placed 5th, and in 2013 Gehlen Catholic placed 3rd.

Another outstanding 2014 Gehlen Jazz Festival was held in March. 7-12th grade bands from Northwest Iowa, worked and performed with Justin Kisor, retired trumpet player from the U.S. Naval Commodores.

Also in the spring of 2014 at Iowa High School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest, Michaela Bretey received a "I" rating on her trumpet solo.

Most importantly, the 5-12 Instrumental Music Department wishes to thank those individuals and businesses for their support! The success of the Instrumental Music Department is attributed to your gift of time, talents, and treasures!
